ETHEREUM COMPLETES THE 'MERGE' THAT WILL MAKE ITS CRYPTO TRANSACTIONS GREENER

Ethereum has completed its much-anticipated "Merge" to a far more energy efficient method of minting new tokens, the cryptocurrency's co-founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted. Ether will no longer be minted by "proof-of-work" that uses powerful computers to solve cryptographic tasks. Instead, they'll be created using "proof-of-stake" methods that require users called validators to stake tokens for the chance to approve transactions and earn a small reward.

Until today, mining Ethereum has required powerful banks of computers to solve difficult math problems. That not only consumed huge amounts of energy, but made Ethereum difficult to scale and costly for small transactions. It also concentrated power into the hands of a few, something that's anathema to the decentralization ethos of crypto.
With the new system, the more a validators stakes, the larger the chance of winning a reward. But everyone gets at least something, as all staked ether earns interest (around 5.2 percent), making it more like buying a bond or putting it in a bank (apart from the wild market volatility, of course). The minimum stake amount required to be a validator is 32 ether (around $50,000 right now), though individuals can do pooled staking with trusted third-party validators to meet that level.

The Merge got its name because the Ethereum blockchain has combined with a parallel network that's now been running for almost two years in a proof-of-stake test, but it's just one step in the transformation. "We still have to scale, we have to fix privacy. To me the Merge symbolizes the difference between an early stage Ethereum and the Ethereum we’ve always wanted," said Buterin during a livestreamed Merge party.

Ether started the day going up, but has since dropped a few percent from yesterday. It remains to be seen if the the Merge will live up to its promise of transforming crypto, as there are still a lot of questions around regulation, Ethereum forks and more. There's also the risk of scams (as usual in crypto), with the risk of transactions from the old chain being copied to the new one, among others.

A história da internet começa no ambiente da Guerra Fria (1945-1991) onde as duas super potências envolvidas, Estados Unidos e União Soviética, estavam divididos nos blocos socialista e capitalista e disputavam poderes e hegemonias.

ARPANET E A ORIGEM DA INTERNET
Com o intuito de facilitar a troca de informações, porque temiam ataques dos soviéticos, o Departamento de Defesa dos Estados Unidos (ARPA - Advanced Research Projects Agency) criou um sistema de compartilhamento de informações entre pessoas distantes geograficamente, a fim de facilitar as estratégias de guerra.
Nesse momento, surge o protótipo da primeira rede de internet, a Arpanet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).
Assim, no dia 29 de outubro de 1969 foi estabelecida a primeira conexão entre a Universidade da Califórnia e o Instituto de Pesquisa de Stanford. Foi um momento histórico, uma vez que o primeiro e-mail foi enviado.

Já na década de 90, o cientista, físico e professor britânico Tim Berners-Lee desenvolveu um navegador ou browser, a World Wide Web (www), a Rede Mundial de Computadores - Internet.
A partir disso, a década de 90 ficou conhecida como o "boom da internet", pois foi quando ela se popularizou pelo mundo, com o surgimento de novos browsers ou navegadores — Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Lynx — e o aumento do número de usuários, navegadores da internet.
Diante disso, ocorre uma grande proliferação de sites, chats, redes sociais — orkut, facebook, msn, twitter —, tornando a internet a rede ou teia global de computadores conectados.
Alguns estudiosos acreditam que a Internet foi um marco importante e decisivo na evolução tecnológica. Isso porque ultrapassou barreiras ao aproximar pessoas, culturas, mundos e informações. Fato este que, segundo eles, não acontecia desde a chegada da televisão, na década de 50.
Hoje em dia, a Internet é utilizada mundialmente como ferramenta de trabalho, diversão, comunicação, educação, informação. Por isso, é comum ouvir: "eu não vivo sem internet".
Além disso, pelo fato de os impostos serem menores, muitos produtos são comercializados em sites de compras.

INTERNET NO BRASIL
No Brasil, a Internet surgiu no final da década de 80, quando as universidades brasileiras começam a compartilhar algumas informações com os Estados Unidos.
Entretanto, foi a partir de 1989, quando fundou-se a Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP), que o projeto de divulgação e acesso ganhou força. O intuito principal era difundir a tecnologia da Internet pelo Brasil e facilitar a troca de informações e pesquisas.
Em 1997, criou-se as "redes locais de conexão" expandindo, dessa forma, o acesso a todo território nacional.
Em 2011, segundo dados do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, aproximadamente 80% da população teve acesso à internet. Isso corresponde a 60 milhões de computadores em uso.
